Nordic Trails in Oberstdorf

Oberstdorf is considered a cross-country skiing paradise at the foot of the Allgäuer Alps. The first-class cross-country trails offer the perfect platform for all cross-country enthusiasts. 75 km of classic track as well as 55 km of skating track offer a varied and extensive terrain for all levels. Even a night-time cross-country trail is available in the evening for all tireless runners.

Oberstdorf, the venue of the Nordic World Ski Championships in January 2021, has enormously expanded the cross-country stadium Ried and the Nordic infrastructure around Oberstdorf once again.

With our NTC Nordic Box in the middle of Oberstdorf, we would like to offer all cross-country skiing enthusiasts a professional contact point. Directly at the entrance of the "Loipe an der Halde" we have a perfect terrain for our courses, as well as a direct access to the extensive Oberstdorf cross-country skiing area.

Information about the cross-country trail status, as well as details about the individual trails can be found in the official winter sports report .

Equipment

Equipment

Classical technique (also called diagonal technique) and free technique differ not only in the choice of the track, but also fundamentally in the equipment. While the classical technique (in the cross-country skiing track) requires the use of the so-called "ascent zone", the free technique uses skis with a flat and homogeneous base. Both types of skis are not suitable for the other technique. The pole length also differs by about 20cm.

To start cross-country skiing, we recommend starting with the "classic technique", since the demands on balance and condition are somewhat lower than with skating.

Our cross-country skiing specialists at NTC Nordic Box will be happy to advise you on site and give you tips on choosing equipment or routes.

Clothing

Clothing

For cross-country skiing we recommend breathable and quick-drying functional clothing. Even in low temperatures it can get warm and sweaty quickly (even during the first steps), so we recommend a layer system for the outerwear. Depending on the weather conditions, a thin wind or rain jacket is recommended as an additional outer layer.
Thin gloves, goggles, a headband or a thin cap are mandatory equipment and should not be missing when cross-country skiing.
A drink or bar for longer tours, as well as a spare shirt (after the tour) are also a good addition to your equipment package. You can also get all the accessories directly on site in our Nordic Box or in our outdoor store at the Fellhorn cablecar.
